What’s a good excuse for a hairline crack on an iphone 3g to convince Apple Genius bar to replace it for free?

I got a hairline crack on the LCD of my new iphone 3g, and on the web there have been stories that Apple will replace it for free? How is this true if accidents aren’t covered in the warranty?

    Call 1800 my iphone
the people on the phone are a lot nicer than the ones in the store
they will have to have you mail your phone in but that is better than paying the 199(8gb) or 299(16gb) repair cost
say that you didn’t do anything to the phone and it just cracked
in a store you have almost no chance of convincing them
